TikTok Shop Europe: Can a US$50.3 Billion Machine Win the Region's Most Cautious Shoppers?

6 min read

Key Takeaways

  • TikTok Shop moved US$50.3 billion in global GMV in H1 2026, up 92 percent, and the US reclaimed its place as its largest market. Europe is the next place the growth has to come from.

  • Ten European markets are now live, but the four largest generated only about €499 million in 90 days. Roughly 70 percent of that ran through affiliated creators; the marketplace-style Shop tab took 15 percent.

  • Europe is harder than the US: shoppers compare and review before they buy, Amazon and local marketplaces set the trust bar, and rules differ country by country.

  • For Chinese brands, TikTok Shop Europe is an incremental channel to test with a creator budget, not a shelf to fill with inventory. Watch its localization before committing.

How Big Is TikTok Shop Now, and Why Does Europe Matter?

Five years ago TikTok Shop was a pilot in a single country, the United Kingdom. In the first half of 2026 the platform's global GMV crossed US$50.3 billion, up 92 percent year on year, with the US growing 103 percent to US$11.8 billion and reclaiming its place as the largest single market, according to Singapore research firm Momentum Works and data platform Tabcut. The same report projects the full year will comfortably pass US$100 billion.

That shift matters for Europe because of where the growth engine now sits. Southeast Asia, the platform's original heartland, is maturing. The US has become the new engine. Europe has been the slow, deliberate expansion, and it is now the one region where TikTok Shop has not yet proved it can repeat the trick.

The timeline shows how cautious the platform has been. It launched in the United Kingdom in 2021, then waited until March 2025 to open Germany, France and Italy, after a December 2024 debut in Spain and Ireland. Only on 15 June 2026 did it add Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland. TikTok says more than 100,000 European businesses have joined across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Ireland, that daily GMV across those markets grew at a triple-digit rate between August 2025 and February 2026, and that a new Sell Across Europe feature lets one registration cover multiple markets.

What Has TikTok Shop Europe Actually Built So Far?

Respectable, but small. Across Germany, France, Spain and Italy, TikTok Shop generated €498.8 million in GMV in the 90 days to 9 July 2026, with affiliated creators accounting for 69.9 percent of it and the Shopping Mall tab only 15.3 percent, according to e-commerce software firm Lengow's analysis of Kalodata estimates. Germany alone was 35 percent of the four-market total. Set against a US half-year of US$11.8 billion, Europe's biggest continental markets are running at well under a tenth of the pace.

Two structural details in that data explain what kind of channel this is becoming. First, the affiliate share. Nearly seven euros in ten are sold by third-party creators talking to a camera, not by brand-owned storefronts or by shoppers searching the marketplace tab. Lengow's own conclusion is blunt: a retailer who plugs in a catalogue and waits will capture roughly one euro in six. Second, the format. Shoppable video, not livestreaming, does about two-thirds of the work; live accounts for one euro in six across the four markets and one in eight in Germany.

In other words, TikTok Shop Europe today is a creator and content business, not a shelf business. The largest storefront across the four markets belongs to SharkNinja, whose Ninja Kitchen shops are number one in Germany, Spain and Italy, and the other names TikTok cites as thriving, from L'Oréal and MAC to NIVEA and Carrefour, are mostly brands that already knew how to run creator-led marketing at scale. A newcomer without that muscle is not entering a marketplace. It is entering a media channel with a checkout attached.

Why Is Europe a Harder Sell Than the US or Southeast Asia?

The US proved the model can scale against entrenched incumbents. Card-transaction data from Consumer Edge shows TikTok Shop reached about 2 percent of US online retail spend in July 2026, up from 1.2 percent a year earlier, and that its US sales now exceed the online businesses of Costco and Target. Momentum Works adds a telling detail: in the US, the marketplace-style Shop tab has become where sales actually close, rising to 51.4 percent of attributed GMV, while live has narrowed to about 8 percent. American shoppers discovered products through video and then came back to search and buy. Europe's Shop tab share is 15 percent. The habit has not formed yet.

The competitive map is also less forgiving. In Germany, the largest of the four markets, Amazon remains by far the largest online shop, ahead of local players Otto and Zalando, and it leads the marketplace ranking too, with eBay, Otto, Zalando and Temu behind it. Those incumbents set expectations for delivery windows, returns and price transparency that a creator-driven impulse channel has to match rather than sidestep. Fashion in particular runs through Zalando's logistics and free-returns model, which is why the brands succeeding on TikTok Shop Europe so far skew toward appliances, beauty and supplements rather than apparel.

Then there is the shopper. European consumers are, on average, more price-comparing and more review-dependent than the US audience that made TikTok Shop's first breakout, a point we made when looking at how Chinese brands can build reviews in Europe without incentives. The market is also fragmented by language, currency and consumer-protection rules. Sell Across Europe reduces the administrative burden of listing in ten countries, but it does not create ten creator programmes or ten localized content formats. Lengow's data already shows the divergence: France runs live at 20 percent of GMV and Germany at 13 percent, Spain browses the Mall tab more than anyone, and Italy sells through merchants' own accounts at about two and a half times the rate of its neighbours. A single European playbook does not exist.

What Should Chinese Brands Watch Before Betting on TikTok Shop Europe?

The honest read is that TikTok Shop Europe is real, early and expensive to do well. The growth off a small base is genuine, the affiliate engine works, and the ten-market footprint plus intra-EU shipping removes the biggest structural excuse for waiting. But the channel rewards creator budgets, product data quality and country-by-country format tuning, not the discount-and-volume reflex that many Chinese cross-border sellers bring from Southeast Asia. Lengow's advice to European retailers applies with more force to a Chinese brand: budget for TikTok Shop as a media line, not a distribution line.

Three things are worth watching over the next two quarters. First, whether the Shop tab share in Europe climbs the way it did in the US; if it does, the channel gets cheaper because a search-led sale costs no creator commission. Second, whether TikTok extends creator funding and logistics support to independent brands rather than mostly to the L'Oréals and SharkNinjas it currently showcases. Third, how the new Austria, Belgium, Netherlands and Poland markets ramp, because those are the first launches where Sell Across Europe was available from day one. Chinese brands that have already learned to compete in Europe on product substance rather than price, as we saw with Chinese air-conditioning brands during Europe's heatwave, are the ones best placed to use the channel.

The European consumer speaks a different commercial language from the American one, in beauty as much as in appliances, a gap we explored in efficacy-first versus clean beauty. TikTok Shop Europe is where that gap will be tested at scale. The US$50.3 billion half year proves the machine can grow. Europe will prove whether it can grow on European terms. For brands, the signal to commit inventory will not be another headline GMV number. It will be evidence that European shoppers are opening the app to buy on purpose, not just being served a video while they scroll.
